The California
Mathematics Content Standards include understanding
large numbers, place value, and number sense. Knowing how
numbers get bigger (addition) or smaller (subtraction) is one
large step towards understanding higher levels of mathematics
later on in school. We are following the San Diego Unified
School Districts Math Modules guidelines to meet the California
State Standards.
Here are some ideas to help us with
our mathematics:
* .Know your Fact Families: (2+3=5, 3+2=5, 5-2=3, 5-3=2).
These number
relationships will help children understand
other concepts as they progress in school.
* Find the sum and the
difference in a math sentence.
* Use a number line and/or
a 100
chart to learn counting on
strategies for ones and tens.
* Number lines help to
build an understanding of less than and greater than.
* Find ways to show how you
got an answer: show your work by drawing pictures, using
numbers and/or using words.
This year
First Graders will learn about the fractions 1/2, 1/4, and one
whole. They will learn about place value to 1,000, too!
